Prince Gyasi

Repainting Africa Through Color, Narrative & Compassion

Prince Gyasi (born 1995 in Accra, Ghana) is a self-taught visual artist who uses his iPhone and hyper-saturated colours to craft mesmerizing images that uplift marginalized communities while redefining global visual narratives. He is the co-founder of BoxedKids, a nonprofit supporting creative educational opportunities for children in Jamestown, Accra—a community often overlooked by mainstream systems.

The Art of Colour Therapy and Personal Synesthesia

  • Gyasi experiences synesthesia, a condition allowing him to associate words or emotions with specific colours. These associations shape his photographic compositions into emotional colour fields—hope becomes pink, joy becomes aquamarine—creating visual experiences that feel therapeutic and deeply personal.

  • By blending vibrant backdrops, saturated skin tones, and dynamic compositions, Gyasi transforms his photographs into works that at first glance resemble paintings—disrupting fine-art hierarchies and questioning traditional photographic norms.

Championing Narrative & Community Impact

  • Many of Gyasi’s most iconic works feature residents—especially children and families—from Jamestown, Accra’s fishing district. Through his series Boxed Kids, he visually honours their resilience, humanity, and beauty while drawing attention to systemic inequalities.

  • Education is integral to his mission. Through BoxedKids, he has funded schooling for underserved youth and actively hosted community photo and story workshops, viewing creativity as both empowerment and liberation.

Global Recognition and Industry Influence

  • In 2024, Gyasi became the first Black photographer to shoot the prestigious Pirelli Calendar, working in part in Ghana—a milestone in representation and cultural affirmation.

  • He has been named a Time Next Generation Leader, spoken at forums such as the Skoll World Forum at Oxford, and collaborated with global brands including Apple, Balmain, and Off‑White while staying based in Accra.

  • Gyasi is part of a rising generation of African photographers working with global luxury brands to reshape how Africa is depicted—bringing authenticity, diversity, and depth to narratives around fashion and culture.

A Vision That Extends Beyond Art

Prince Gyasi’s impact isn't just in the vivid frames he produces—it's natural proof that visual art can be intimately expressive, socially conscious, and culturally transformative.

He gives tools back to the communities that inspire his work, reinscribing agency into representation. By using colour to heal, education to elevate, and portraiture to dignify, Gyasi shows that African creatives can shape global culture on their own terms.
